Hallormsstaðaskógur, Iceland’s largest forest, stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Lagarfljót and has a tree collection and a campsite. Fljótsdalur, just beyond, has several smaller forests, including Eyjólfsstaðaskógur and Úlfsstaðaskógur, both popular for walking.
Skriðuklaustur, 25 km away, was the home of the author Gunnar Gunnarsson. It stands on the site of a 16th-century monastery, whose archaeological remains lie beside it. The house now hosts art exhibitions and other cultural events, and the café Klausturkaffi is in the mansion.
