Fljótsdalur has several small forests, including Eyjólfsstaðaskógur and Úlfsstaðaskógur, both popular with walkers. Hallormsstaðaskógur, the largest forest in Iceland, lies along the eastern shore of Lake Lagarfljót and has a collection of tree species and a campsite.

Skriðuklaustur, the former home of the author Gunnar Gunnarsson, is about 25 km away. The house was built on the site of a 16th-century monastery and now hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. Café Klausturkaffi is in the former dining room, and the excavated remains of the monastery are nearby.

Egilsstaðir, often called the capital of East Iceland, is about a 15-minute drive away. It lies at the northern end of Lake Lagarfljót and, with around 2,500 residents, is the largest settlement in the region. There are gas stations, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés and a swimming pool.

Geert Popkema
