Búðardalur is a small village on Hvammsfjörður. The area has a long settlement history and was used as a stopping place by early settlers travelling through the region. Today Búðardalur is a common stop on the way to the Westfjords and has a supermarket, restaurants and a gas station. A new swimming pool is due to open in April 2026, about 200 metres from the house.
Nearby is Eiríksstaðir, the former home of Eiríkur rauði, or Erik the Red. He later settled in Greenland, and his son Leifur Eiríksson is associated with the Norse voyages to North America.
