The small village of Þingeyri (Thingeyri) lies in the fjord of Dýrafjörður. It has a population of ca 260 inhabitants. Its main landmark is mountain Kaldbakur or, in English, Coldback, which is the highest mountain of the Westfjords. Despite the size of the village, it has a small coffee house, restaurant and a gas station with a small shop where you find groceries.
Ísafjörður is ca 50 km north of Þingeyri. Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords with a population of ca 2.600 inhabitants. Beautiful fjords and steep mountains surround it. The old center of Ísafjörður has wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th century. The Westfjords Heritage Museum shows an exhibition about the town’s maritime history, including a collection of old fishing boats. The old hospital, now a cultural center, contains archives and photography. There are supermarkets, restaurants, shops and a public swimming pool.
