Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjörður and, with about 20,000 residents, is the largest town in North Iceland. It's often called the Capital of the North and is the region's centre for commerce and services, with a harbour and a domestic airport. There are supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations, swimming pools and museums.

Akureyri Church, in the town centre, was built in 1940; its stained-glass windows depict scenes from Icelandic Christian history. The nearby Akureyri Art Museum displays contemporary art from Iceland and abroad, and the Botanical Garden, also close to the centre, features plants from all over Iceland. The Christmas House, Jólahúsið, is open year-round.

»We loved this house, beautiful view over the water and Akureyri. Kitchen well equipped, spacious, bathroom ok. It is a bit dusty everywhere, could use a good spring cleaning. Also lots of outdoor furniture.«
