Lake Þingvallavatn is within walking distance, and Þingvellir National Park is close by. The park is where the Alþing, Iceland's historic parliament, met from the 10th to the 18th century. It lies in a rift valley between two tectonic plates, with cliffs and fissures including Almannagjá, and walking trails throughout.
The village of Laugarvatn is about a 30 km drive away, on the shore of the shallow lake of the same name. Around 200 people live there; the village grew around the boarding school and is now a regular stop on the Golden Circle. It has a small grocery store, a restaurant, a gas station, a swimming pool, a sauna, horse riding and a golf course. There are also geothermal hot springs along the lakeshore, and boats can be hired for trips on the lake.
Geysir, Gullfoss and Skálholt are also within easy reach.
