Laugarvatn is about 15 km away, on the lake of the same name. Around 200 people live there. The village grew around the boarding school and is now a regular stop on the Golden Circle. It has a grocery store, a restaurant, a gas station, a swimming pool, a sauna, horse riding, and a golf course.
There are geothermal hot springs along the shore, and you can hire a boat to explore the lake.
