The holiday cottage area at Úthlíð is on the Golden Circle route, a short drive from the Geysir geothermal area in southwest Iceland. The geothermal area includes the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. There is a large visitor centre with a souvenir shop, restaurants and a gas station. The area also has horse riding, a golf course and walking trails. Gullfoss is about 10 km away.
The nearest villages are Reykholt and Laugarvatn. Both have a small grocery store, a restaurant and a gas station.
Selfoss, the largest town in South Iceland, is about 65 km away, on the banks of the Ölfusá. With around 11,000 residents, it is a centre for commerce and small industry. There are shops, restaurants, supermarkets and an outdoor geothermal swimming pool.
