Nestled in the remote beauty of the Westfjords, Gamlahús is a protected historic house dating back to 1884. At the time of its construction, it was the largest wooden house built in the Icelandic countryside.

Today, this traditional timber house has two apartments. The ground-floor apartment is available as a holiday retreat, offering guests the opportunity to experience authentic Icelandic heritage in peaceful surroundings.

The house is surrounded by a green lawn and open skies, with the shoreline just a short walk away. Whether you wish to explore the beach, breathe in the crisp sea air, or simply enjoy the quiet, this is a place to slow down. (Shovels and buckets are available for both children and playful adults.)

Just down the road at Ögur farm, you’ll find a charming seasonal café, open during the summer months — well worth a visit. Nearby, on a neighboring farm, you may spot a collection of decommissioned vehicles, affectionately known by locals as a “bílakirkjugarður” — a car cemetery — adding a touch of rural character to the landscape.

In the next fjord lies one of the area’s well-known seal colonies, along with the historic turf house café Litlibær (“The Little Farm”), where you can step back in time while enjoying homemade refreshments.

At Reykjanes, you’ll find a hotel and a rustic geothermal outdoor pool — home to what is often called Iceland’s largest natural hot pot.

The nearby farm Heydalur, now a welcoming countryside hotel, offers horse rentals, a restaurant, and a unique swimming pool inside a greenhouse fed by natural hot springs. Arctic foxes are occasionally seen in the area, and in the deep, calm fjords, lucky visitors may even spot whales passing through these pristine northern waters.

We also recommend driving along the dramatic coastline toward Kaldalón to explore the striking landscapes surrounding the glacier Drangajökull — one of Iceland’s most remote and majestic ice caps.

The town of Ísafjörður is within reach, as is Bolungarvík, where a mountain-top viewing platform offers unforgettable panoramic views over the fjords.
