Hallormsstaðaskógur, the largest forest in Iceland, lies along the eastern shore of Lake Lagarfljót and has a collection of tree species and a campsite. Fljótsdalur also has several smaller forests, including Eyjólfsstaðaskógur and Úlfsstaðaskógur, both popular with walkers.

Skriðuklaustur, the former home of the author Gunnar Gunnarsson, is about 25 km away. The house was built on the site of a 16th-century monastery and now hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. Café Klausturkaffi is in the former dining room, and the excavated remains of the monastery are nearby.

Egilsstaðir, often called the capital of East Iceland, is about a 17-minute drive away, at the northern end of Lake Lagarfljót. With around 2,500 residents, it's the largest settlement in the region and has gas stations, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés and a swimming pool.
