Akureyri sits at the end of Eyjafjörður and, with about 20,000 residents, is the largest town in North Iceland. It's often called the "Capital of the North" and is the region's centre for commerce and services, with a harbour and a domestic airport. There are supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations, swimming pools, and museums.
Akureyri Church, in the town centre, was built in 1940; its stained-glass windows depict scenes from Icelandic Christian history. The nearby Akureyri Art Museum displays contemporary art from Iceland and abroad. The Botanical Garden, also close to the town centre, features plants from all over Iceland. The Christmas House, Jólahúsið, is open year-round.
