Aðaldalshraun is a lava field in South Þingeyjarsýsla, between Skjálfandafljót and Laxá, close to the fishing town of Húsavík. It makes a good base for day trips around North Iceland and into the northeastern Highlands, including Askja. A vehicle suitable for highland roads is required.

Húsavík sits on Skjálfandi Bay and has about 2,400 residents. It’s often called Iceland’s whale watching capital, and tours depart from the harbour. One of its best-known landmarks is the wooden church Húsavíkurkirkja, built in 1907. The town has a bakery, supermarket, shops, museums, a gas station, and a swimming pool. Húsavík Airport also offers domestic flights.
