Beautiful areas just outside Reykjavík are for example the Heiðmörk Nature Reserve and the popular hiking trail up to Mount Esja. Or you can simply stroll along the coast of Reykjavík. If you don't manage to see the Northern Lights, why not visit the Northern Lights Museum? In Perlan - you can see the "Wonders of Iceland", and learn everything there is to know about glaciers and volcanoes. You can even experience an ice cave.
